BOSTON – The Northeastern volleyball team will continue conference play this weekend with the beginning of a six-game home stand. The Huskies welcome William and Mary on Friday at 7 p.m. and James Madison on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
This past weekend, the Huskies played two of the top teams in the CAA and came away with a 1-1 record beginning conference play.
Â
On Friday, Northeastern defeated a very tough UNCW team by a score of 3-1. The Seahawks bested Northeastern in set one, but the Huskies were able to bounce back and take three straight for the victory. Northeastern held the advantage in kills (51-49) and digs (81-75), setting a season high of 81 digs, but UNCW had the lead in aces, (6-4) blocks (14-9) and assists (46-45).
Â
In Friday's match up,
Kristen Walding hit a career high 17 digs paired with 40 assists for her third double-double of the season. Additionally,
Caterina Rosander tied her season high of seven blocks from the five setter vs. California.
Â
Northeastern upped its win streak to eight before dropping a 3-0 decision to Charleston on Sunday. The last time the Huskies won eight straight was a nine game run from Sept. 14 through Oct. 13 in 2012.
Â
The Huskies faced a dominating Charleston squad on Sunday. After dropping the first set 25-14, Northeastern was able to keep the margin tighter in sets two and three. (25-22, 25-19) Despite a severe deficit in kills (53-26), Northeastern led the match in blocks (10-6), tied for aces (3-3), and trailed slightly in digs (79-64).
Â
SCOUTING THE TRIBE
The Tribe heads to Northeastern for match three of a four-match road trip. Last weekend, William and Mary incurred two 3-0 setbacks against conference leader James Madison and Elon. Against James Madison, the William and Mary squad was able to push the third set to extra points, and forced the Dukes to rack up the score to 32-30 before claiming the victory.
Â
William and Mary's Casey Foote leads the team in kills per set with 3.16. As the primary setter, Autumn Brenner is averaging 9.91 assists per set, which places her in the top 100 in the nation and third in the CAA. Defensively, Sara Zumbach is putting up 4.12 digs per set.
Â
This season, freshman Autumn Brenner has earned two CAA weekly awards. After the first week of the season, Brenner was tabbed CAA Rookie of the Week for her performance at Clemson's Big Orange Bash. Brenner was also named CAA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19 after the Tribe went 2-1 at the Gamecock Invitational.
Â
SCOUTING THE DUKES
James Madison currently sits atop the CAA rankings after going 2-0 against William and Mary and Elon last week. Against William and Mary, Janey Goodman led the match with 13 kills and Taylor Austin had the top mark in digs at 25. In the four set match on Friday, Sept. 23 at Elon, Tilbe Yaglioglu posted a career high 30 assists and the team posted a season high 60 kills and 60 assists. In North Carolina, the Dukes also posted an overall .308 hitting percentage.
Â
Senior Janey Goodman leads the Dukes with 4.26 kills per set. This mark also places her 32nd in the nation and first in the CAA. Jessica Lewis of Towson is right on Goodman's heels at 4.25 kills per set. Taylor Gail is averaging 1.11 blocks per set, which ranks fourth in the conference.
Â
Three members of the James Madison 2016 roster have garnered CAA weekly awards this season. The Dukes nearly swept the weekly awards on Sept. 5 with Janey Goodman earning CAA Offensive Player of the Week and Sarah Martin being named Rookie of the Week. Those awards came after JMU's sweep of the Cornell Invitational. This past week, Bryn Recker grabbed Offensive Player of the Week for her 25 kills and hitting percentages of .500 and .458 in the weekend matches.
Â
WHITE HOT
This past Monday, freshman
Shaina White earned CAA Co-Rookie of the Week honors. This is the first weekly award for the Huskies this season and the first since October 2014. At UNCW, White tallied 10 kills with zero errors for a .476 hitting percentage. This performance was against the top blocking team in the CAA. White has consistently recorded above average hitting percentages while also contributing at the net with 30 blocks so far this season.
