BOSTON – The Northeastern volleyball team secured its 12th win of the season, handing a 3-0 decision to William and Mary on Friday night. With the victory, Northeastern doubles it's win total from 2015 and is now boasting a 12-5 overall record. Additionally, the Huskies improve to 2-1 in conference play, their best start since 2013. The Tribe moves to 6-10 overall and 0-3 in the CAA after dropping straight matches to James Madison, Elon and Northeastern.
The Huskies asserted their dominance quickly, taking sets one and two by scores of 25-20 and 25-19. The Tribe attempted to rally for set three but was unsuccessful, giving the Huskies the sweep with a score of 25-22.
Northeastern was led by
Jamie Bredahl with 16 kills.
Kristen Walding supported the attack with 41 assists and
Gabrielle Eyl registered 14 digs.
Carmen Costa and
Shaina White each added 9 kills while
Sherrie Wang and
Clare Lund contributed 12 and 10 digs respectively.
The William and Mary offense was led by freshman Casey Foote who put down 12 kills. Teammate Sydney Biniak followed close behind with 11 kills and a .391 hitting percentage. Rookie Autumn Brenner recorded 34 assists while Sara Zumbach led the team in digs with 17.
Set One Recap: (25-20 Northeastern)
- Hannah Fry opened the match with a kill to put the Huskies up 1-0.
- William and Mary benefitted from two Northeastern errors to take the lead 4-2.
- The Huskies and the Tribe traded leads until the Tribe tied the set at 8.
- Northeastern scored four consecutive points, forcing William and Mary to take a timeout at 12-8.
- The Tribe inched back cutting the deficit to 1. (18-17)
- Carmen Costa and Hannah Fry blocked an attempt from Tribe standout Casey Foote to put the Huskies over. (25-20)
Set Two Recap: (25-19 Northeastern)
- Northeastern and William and Mary kept the score tight again, trading side outs en route to tying the set at 7.
- Northeastern went on another four point run, forcing the Tribe to scramble.
- When it looked as though William and Mary could have fought through, the Huskies went on a 7-1 run to end the set by a six-point margin.
Set Three Recap: (25-22 Northeastern)
- The Tribe came into set three hungry for a comeback win.
- William and Mary's Autumn Brenner had a hand in the first three points of the set, giving the Tribe a 3-0 advantage.
- William and Mary continued to climb, racking the score up to 6-3.
- Northeastern shut down the attempt tying it back up at 11.
- Two consecutive kills from Shaina White put the Huskies up three at 17-14.
- William and Mary was gunning for the upset at 23-22 but kills from Natalie Shollin and Hannah Fry ended the match.
