Volleyball fights hard, but comes up short in CAA quarterfinals

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Northeastern lost to Hofstra 3-2 in a hard fought quarterfinal match of the CAA Tournament on Thursday. The Huskies took the first two sets, but the Pride came back to tie the match up at 2-2. ­­­­­The fifth set saw six different match points for the two teams.
 
Two Huskies posted double-doubles in the quarterfinal match. Amy Underdown recorded 25 kills and 17 digs for her 16th double-double of the season. The sophomore totaled 449 kills this season, the seventh most in a single season in program history.
 
Samantha Shupe racked up 29 assists and 15 digs in her eighth double-double of the season.
 
Both Gabrielle Tschannen and Brigitte Burcescu had great matches for the Red and Black. Tschannen posted 12 kills and nine blocks, hitting .450. Burcescu racked up 12 kills and two blocks.
 
Natalie Shollin tallied eight kills and six blocks, while Athena Ardila contributed five kills and six blocks. Gabrielle Eyl was solid from the back row with 23 digs in the match, while Walding posted 20 assists.
 
Eyl racked up 641 digs this season, which is the fifth most in a single season in program history.

  • The Huskies went on a 8-2 run to take a 12-5 lead
  • A kill from Ardila gave Northeastern a 17-13 lead
  • A kill from Hofstra's Ivania Ortiz secured the set win for the Pride
 
Set Four Recap:

  • A kill from Tschannen tied the set up at 6-6
  • A 3-0 run for Northeastern tied the set at 13-13
  • A block from Burcescu and Tschannen tied the set at 16-16
  • A kill from Underdown held off Hofstra's set point
  • A kill from Ortiz gave the fourth set to the Pride
 
Set Four Recap:

  • An ace from Eyl tied the set at 3-3
  • A kill from Underdown cut Hofstra's lead to one, 11-10
  • Northeastern went on a 4-1 run to tie the set at 14-14
  • Underdown's kill tied the set at 19-19
  • A kill from Hofstra's Laura Masciullo secured the set and match win for the Pride
