Northeastern tops New Hampshire in five-set thriller

BOSTON – The Huskies took down the New Hampshire Wildcats in a thrilling five-set victory on Tuesday.
 
After winning the first set and dropping the next two, Northeastern jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the fourth set, with kills form Natalie Shollin and Athena Ardila. The Huskies won the fourth set 25-13 to force a decisive fifth set, where Northeastern went on a 8-0 to take an 12-4 lead.
 
A kill from Amy Underdown secured the fifth set and match win for the Red and Black.
                                                                                                                   
Three Huskies posted double-doubles in tonight five-set victory, Athena Ardila, Samantha Shupe and Underdown. It was the first of Ardila's and Shupe's careers, and the second of the season for Underdown.
 
Ardila racked up 14 kills and 15 digs, while Shupe recorded 37 assists and 14 digs. Underdown tallied 14 kills and 16 digs.
 
Gabrielle Tschannen also had a great night for the Red and Black, posting nine kills and nine blocks. Gabrielle Eyl had a great match from the back row, with 26 digs on the night.
 
The Huskies racked up six aces during the match: Eyl, Shupe, Ardila, Wang and Underdown.
 
This was Northeastern's 22nd win against New Hampshire putting the series at 24-22 in the Wildcats favor.

Set One Recap:
  • 25-20, Northeastern
  • The Huskies took an early 5-3 win
  • An ace for Wang gave Northeastern an 11-6 lead
  • Northeastern took a six-point lead with a kill from Burcescu
  • Ardila's kill gave the Huskies a first-set win

  • New Hampshire took an early 4-1 lead
  • Northeastern went on a 4-0 run to gain the lead back, 7-5
  • An ace for Underdown tied the set up at 13-13
  • A kill from New Hampshire's Kennedi Smith gave the Wildcats the second set win
 
Set Three Recap:
  • 28-26, New Hampshire
  • After being tied early in the set, New Hampshire took a 10-7 lead
  • The Huskies tied it back up with a kill from Shollin, 11-11
  • An Eyl ace tied the set up at 21-21
  • Northeastern fought hard, but New Hampshire took the set 28-26
 
Set Four Recap:
  • 25-13, Northeastern
  • The Huskies started off the fourth set with a 8-1 run, with two blocks from Brigitte Burcescu and Tschannen
  • A kill from Shollin gave the Huskies a eight-point lead
  • An Ardila kill gave the Red and Black the fourth set win
 
Set Five Recap:
  • 15-12, Northeastern
  • A Shollin block gave Northeastern a 5-4 lead
  • The Huskies went on a 8-0 run to take a 12-4 lead over the Wildcats
  • New Hampshire came back to trail by two, but a kill from Underdown gave Northeastern the match win
 
Up Next For Northeastern:
The Huskies will host Boston College, Harvard ad UMass Lowell in the New England Challenge on September 15-17. Northeastern will face off against Harvard on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Cabot Center.
