PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Dominating the possession for the entirety of the game, the Northeastern field hockey team posted its first shutout of the season with a 3-0 victory over Bryant on Tuesday afternoon.
Three different Huskies each recorded a goal on the day, including
Bella Cuomo who earned her first collegiate goal to seal the victory for the Huskies.
Julia Gluyas posted her first shutout of the season, and the second of her career, making a pair of stops in the outing.
The first 33:43 of play resulted in a lot of shots by the Huskies (15), including 10 on goal, but the score remained knotted at zero apiece. Then
Rachel Campbell opened the scoring by ripping in a penalty corner shot attempt, for her third score of the year, to get the Huskies on the board. The shot was stopped by Meg Barrett and inserted perfectly by
June Curry-Lindahl
Just over a minute later, with just nine seconds to go in the half,
Lexie Dunleavy added to the total, with her third goal of the season, to make it a 2-0 lead for the Huskies at the half off of a pass from
Angela Connolly.
Northeastern's offense controlled the possession for almost all of the first half and pelted shot after shot at Bryant's goaltender Marijn Jaarsma, who finished the half with 10 saves, and ended the game with 12.
Cuomo added her first career goal later on in the second half to truly solidify the victory for the Huskies, settling the ball and slamming it into the cage for the 3-0 lead. Cuomo's goal was aided by
Kellie Stigas who sent her a pass across the circle. The redshirt sophomore marks the sixth Husky this season to tally her first career points in 2018.
The Huskies look to keep the momentum going when they return to action this weekend with a Sunday afternoon game on the campus of Dartmouth College when Northeastern takes on the Big Green at 1 p.m.
