The Northeastern men's track & field team kicked off the 2010-11 campaign with the 2nd annual Jay Carisella Track & Field Invitational all day on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center on Saturday, Dec. 4.
Junior
Evan Whetsell got things going for Northeastern's off the bat for the Huskies in the season opener, claiming the 800-meter run in IC4A-qualifing time of 1:53.13. The Potomac, Md. native was more than two second before his competition. Northeastern went on to capture eight top three finishes.
Saturday's track meet was named in honor and memory of the late Jay Carisella. Jay was a member of the Northeastern track team in 2007, though he tragically died in an automobile accident on Dec. 23, 2007.
Jay participated as a middle distance runner. He demonstrated outstanding character, led by example and always created a positive experience for all people he came in contact with.
A three-sport athlete in high school, Jay understood the value of athletics and education. Beyond the acclaim he received for his distance running, Jay's most valuable asset on the team was his character. Jay had a big heart as he dedicated much of his time to volunteer in the community.
The spirit of Jay Carisella and his presence as a dedicated student, athlete and friend will carry on as today marks the dedication of the 2nd annual Jay Carisella Track & Field Invitational.
