Northeastern held UNC Wilmington scoreless for the first eight innings of play, but four unanswered runs were too much to handle for NU in a 4-2 loss at Friedman Diamond. The Huskies manufactured runs in the first and fourth innings, giving starter
Charly Bashara some room to work with, but in the end it wasn't enough to get the win. Bashara was stellar, pitching into the eighth inning and allowing just two runs while striking out seven Seahawks.
Bashara persevered the entire game, winning battles in every inning to keep the Huskies in the lead. UNC Wilmington had a runner in scoring position for the first five innings, but Bashara coaxed weak at bats out of hitters to get out of jams. The seven strikeouts were a season high.
John Puttress and
Logan Gillis led the Huskies on offense with two hits apiece. Gillis drove in a run with a double, his ninth of the season. Puttress scored one of the two runs.
Matt Miller stroked a hit and scored once, and
David Gustafson earned a single and drew a walk.
Frank Compagnone got an RBI on a fielder's choice.
NU started the game on top, scoring one in the first inning with some small ball. Miller singled to lead it off, and moved to third on a controversial play. Miller took off on a hit-and-run, and Pastyrnak made contact for a nubber to third base. Miller never stopped running, diving into third base just ahead of the tag, prompting an umpire meeting for more than five minutes to determine the call. Miller came home two batters later on Compagnone's fielder's choice after
Tony DiCesare was hit by a pitch.
Both teams were scoreless until the fourth, when Puttress reached on a single and Gillis drove him in with a double. Gillis was a bit overzealous, though, as he was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple.
It would be the last run for NU, as UNCW got three in the eighth and one in the ninth for the final 4-2 margin. Robbie Monday hit his third home run of the series, a solo job off Bashara in the eighth. Two singles and a triple later, Wilmington had nabbed a 3-2 lead. A walk, single, sacrifice and a groundout produced the fourth run.
Puttress singled in the ninth, giving hope to the NU faithful, but a hard liner and a strikeout ended the contest.
NU ended with six hits on the day, while the Seahawks had 12. Justin Bradley got the win for UNCW, his first decision of the year, while
Dan Zehr got the loss, his second decision in as many days after getting a win yesterday. NU pitchers walked just one batter, but Bashara was responsible for two hit by pitches.
NU gets a break from mid-week games and head out onto the road next weekend, taking on William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. in a three game series. Check back on GoNU.com for a starting rotation and other information.
