SATURDAY
The Northeastern men's track & field team posted three individual victories and cracked several all-time performance lists en route to second-place team finish at the 2011 New England Outdoor Championship in New Haven, Conn.
The Huskies turned in a total 86.5 points in the field of 38 teams. Northeastern bested 36 other squads while host Southern Connecticut State claimed the title with an aggregate of 110 points.
Freshman
Eric Jenkins continues to make a name for himself after winning the 1,500-meter run in his first-career New England Outdoor Championship. The Portsmouth, N.H. native clocked in at 3:46.04 for the victory, marking his best time this season. Jenkins pace now stands as the fifth-best mark in Northeastern history as the first-year harrier ousted Jim Formica's mark of 3:46.64 set back all the way on May 25, 1997. Jenkins is also Northeastern's first 1,500-meter New England victor since Erik Nedeau won three straight from 1992 through 1994 and just the fifth Husky to win the event.
Senior tri-captain
Jonathan Hall left his mark on the New England Outdoor Championship with a triumphant march of 51.77 in the 400-meter hurdles. Hall is now a two-time 400-meter hurdles New England champion after capturing the event with a time of 52.71 in 2009. Hall is just the third NU representative to win the race.
Junior transfer
Darius Velez ended a 20-year draught for Northeastern sprinters and emerged as the 100-meter dash champion after a jaunt of 10.90. Velez is NU's fourth 100-meter dash New England champion and the first since Tony Arrendel won the race with a time of 10.74 in 1991.
Northeastern's 4 x 800-meter relay team was untested until the New England Championship but showed no signs of rust as the quartet posted a second-place time of 7:36.73 for eight points. The Huskies' pace also came in as the third-fastest clip in school history, taking over the spot set on May 22, 1999.
Senior
Patrick Jablonski racked up 13 points on Saturday with a second and fourth-place showing in the discus throw and shot put, respectively. Jablonski cleared 51.44m (168'9) in the discus throw for eight points while his toss of 16.87m (55'4.25) was good for five points.
Senior
Brian Racca closed out Northeastern's scoring efforts in the field and put together a combination of 14.35m (47'1) in the triple jump for another five-point performance in fourth place.
Junior
Evan Whetsell crossed the line in 1:52.51 for fifth place and four points in the 800-meter run, standing as his third-fastest time of the season.
The Huskies 4 x 100-meter relay team turned in Northeastern's final scoring time of 42.83. Northeastern's four-man squad placed fifth for another four points.
THURSDAY - FRIDAY
After the second day of action at the 2011 New England Outdoor Track & Field Championship, the men's squad ranks fourth with an aggregate of 22.5 points as the field performances highlighted the Huskies' efforts once again.
Northeastern is 23.5 points behind the leader and host school, Southern Connecticut State (46 points).
Junior
Andrew Staples and newcomer
Kaylin Miranda took care of business in the long jump, recording second and fourth-place finishes, respectively, of 7.29m (23'11) and 7.13m (23'4.75). Staples' jump was worth eight points and stands as a team-best thus far while Miranda's total was good for five points.
Brian Daly kept his strong season going with a clearance of 4.65m (15'3) in the pole vault. The tri-captain's vault tied for fourth place and yielded 4.5 points for the Huskies.
In the hammer throw, newcomers
James Hall and
Max Milder combined for three Northeastern points, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. Hall's throw of 54.10m (177'6) was good for two points while Milder gathered a point with his throw of 54.03m (177'3).
On Friday, three Huskies qualified for their respective finals on the oval. Junior transfer
Darius Velez earned a spot on the 100-meter dash finals line after turning in a second-place effort of 10.90.
First-year sprinter
Alex Shapiro clocked in with a time of 22.28 in the 200-meter dash preliminaries. Shapiro finished ahead of 22 others in fifth place and will race in the finals on Saturday.
Senior tri-captain
Jonathan Hall elongated his postseason with a time of 53.84 in the 400-meter hurdles trial. Hall's time was good for fifth place on Friday.
