    Contribution to Athletics

John A. Curry has been elected to the hall of Fame for the expanse of his contributions to Northeastern athletics.

Dr. Curry oversaw the rise of one of New England's premier athletics programs. As University President from 1989 through 1996, his visionary leadership brought varsity athletics in line with a University-wide concept of national prominence for Northeastern. Curry, a member of the Class of 1956, advanced through the ranks at Northeastern, director and dean of admissions; dean, vice president and senior vice president for administration; and from 1984 to 1989, executive vice president of the University. In 1980, he received his doctorate in Education from Boston University. The first Northeastern graduate to become its president, Curry was always a populist president in the University's athletics and intramural operations. Facilities were added and improved under Curry's lead, including a major renovation to Matthews Arena. During Curry's tenure, the department of athletics accentuated its interaction with the Office of Academic Advisement and the graduation rate of athletes improved. Curry was particularly proud of the growth of women's athletics under his administration.

Outside of athletics, as president, Curry streamlined the University's academic and administrative organization; focused its programs and services to maximize the academic achievement, career development, and social and intellectual growth of the individual student; and raised its research and academic standards.
