Richard J. Cavanaugh was elected to the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in the sport of track.

A 1958 graduate, he was the premier forward in New England from 1954 to 1957. In the 1955-56 season, he scored 30 goals and 27 assists for 57 points to lead the Huskies and New England. That total was also a Northeastern record at the time. His career scoring total of 132 points was also a Northeastern record at the time and currently leaves him as NU's 15th all time point scorer. Cavanaugh was the recipient of the Walter A. Brown Trophy as the outstanding American collegiate hockey player in 1956 and was voted to the All New England and All East squads of 1956 and 1957. He earned three varsity hockey letters and in all three years received the Class of 1939 Hockey Trophy as the teams Most Valuable Player. In his senior season (1956-57) he was elected captain of the ice team.

His secondary school career at Malden Catholic High School was as distinguished as his collegiate career. He won four letters in hockey, three in football and one in baseball. He also captained the football team in his senior year. He was voted to the Catholic League Hockey All-Star team twice, the State Tournament team twice and the New England Tournament squad once. In his senior year, he was voted the Outstanding Athlete and the MVP of the hockey team.
